The newest known space vehicle is called Curiosity. Curiosity is a new space rover that is going to be used for exploration in Mars.
Other space exploration vehicles are Mariner 4 launched in 1964 was the fourth in the series of flyby space crafts used for information on Mars. Mariner 4 objective was to get the first pictures of Mars. Mariner 4 was unmanned. Mariners 6 and 7 launched in 1969. Objectives were to study the surface and atmosphere. Mariners 6 and 7 were unmanned. Mariner 8 failed to launch properly.
Mariner 9 launched in 1971. Mariner 9 had the objectives of both 8 and 9. Mariner 8 objectives were to measure 70% of Martian surface. Mariner 9 objectives were to study temporal changes. Mariner 9 was unmanned.Viking 1 launched on August 20, 1975, and arrived on Mars on June 19, 1976. Viking 1 remained on Mars for four years, but was only planned to be there for 90 days. Viking 1 took pictures, and conducted experiments to see if there were any signs of life. Viking 2 launched on September 9, 1975, and arrived on Mars on August 7, 1976. Viking 2 was unmanned. Curiosity Rover launched on November 6, 2011, landed on August 6, 2012. Objectives of Curiosity are to determine if Mars has ever been able to support microbial life. Curiosity was unmanned.
As of 2016, there have not been any manned missions to Mars.
